open-vm-tools is preinstalled to Ubuntu 14.04 and later releases:
open-vm-toolspackages for user space components are available with new versions of major Linux distributions, and are installed as part of the OS installation in several cases.

Automatic installation of
open-vm-toolsalong with the OS installation eliminates the need to separately install
open-vm-tools is absent in your Ubuntu, then you can install it manually with the command:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop
